Pressure Compensation Elements

Pressure compensation is the process of balancing the internal pressure of a sealed underwater device with the external ambient water pressure. As depth increases, external pressure rises; without compensation, seals can fail and water can ingress. Oil-filled compensators use a flexible diaphragm and spring mechanism to continuously equalize this pressure differential, protecting sensitive internal components throughout the entire depth range.

Pressure-compensated systems use an oil compensator or internal diaphragm to match external water pressure, allowing seals to remain intact at great depths and preventing seawater ingress. Non-pressure-compensated systems rely solely on static seals, which are subject to increasing differential pressure with depth, raising the risk of seal failure, water ingress, and component damage — making them unsuitable for deep-sea deployments beyond shallow depths.

A pressure equalization element serves the same fundamental purpose as a pressure compensation element — it equalizes the internal pressure of a submerged device with the external water pressure. In practice, it is often a diaphragm, bladder, or oil compensator assembly. NV Mechanics Design's 260cc Oil Compensator acts as a pressure equalization element, using a rolling diaphragm and SST or Inconel spring to maintain consistent positive internal pressure across its full volume range.

The 260cc Oil Compensator is rated for depths up to 6000 m, making it suitable for the most extreme deep-sea applications. The self-compensated Linear and Rotary Actuators are both rated to 3000 msw (meters of sea water). All products are designed and tested for reliable performance under the high ambient pressures encountered in subsea and offshore environments.

The 260cc Oil Compensator is compatible with Panolin or Telus 22 oil. These oils are selected for their suitability in submerged, oil-filled mechanical systems. The compensator maintains 0.7 to 1 bar of positive internal pressure over its full 260 cc volume, and an optional analog sensor or limit switch can provide low oil level indication for monitoring in critical applications.

Yes. The 260cc Oil Compensator features built-in visual oil level monitoring through slots in the spring housing, allowing a quick visual check during maintenance. For remote or automated monitoring, an optional analog sensor or limit switch is available to provide a low oil level indication signal, which is especially useful in integrated ROV or subsea system deployments where direct visual inspection is not always possible.
