Underwater High Force Industrial Linear Actuator Overview

For high-force underwater applications, brushless motor-driven linear actuators with integrated ball screws or roller screws are the preferred choice. They offer high efficiency, precise position control via resolvers or encoders, and can sustain large axial loads. NV Mechanics Design's actuators pair brushless motors with rotary resolvers to deliver up to 77,500 N in subsea deployments.

NV Mechanics Design offers actuators rated to 3,000 msw (meters of sea water) and up to 6,000 meters depth. The Self-Compensated model is rated to 3,000 msw, while the Trunion and 60,000 N Force models are rated to 6,000 m, covering deep-sea ROV, offshore, and subsea valve control applications.

The actuators are constructed from Stainless Steel 316 (SST 316) or Titanium, both selected for superior corrosion resistance in marine and saltwater environments. Seacon underwater connectors are used for reliable subsea electrical connectivity, and pressure-compensated oil-filled housings protect internal components from hydrostatic pressure.

Power supply options vary by model. The Linear Actuator Trunion 1000N supports 24 VDC, 48 VDC, and 230 VDC. The 60,000 N Force model operates on 230 VDC. The Self-Compensated model runs on 24 VDC. This range accommodates diverse ROV power systems and subsea infrastructure configurations.

Depending on the model, position feedback is provided via a rotary resolver mounted on the motor shaft or an absolute 30-bit multi-turn encoder on the output shaft. The Self-Compensated model's absolute encoder retains position data between power cycles, eliminating the need for re-homing after power interruptions — critical for subsea deployments.

The Self-Compensated Linear Actuator supports RS422 (RS485 full-duplex) and RS232 serial communication at 19200 baud with all logic and driver circuitry integrated internally. Other models use external resolver feedback for integration with customer-supplied control systems. Windows utility software and documentation are also available for the Self-Compensated model.
