Constant Force Linear Actuator for Precise Motion

The three primary types of actuators are linear, rotary, and oscillatory. Linear actuators — like those offered by NV Mechanics Design Ltd. — produce straight-line motion and are ideal for subsea valve actuation, ROV manipulation, and pipeline control. They are available in electric, hydraulic, or pneumatic variants, with electric brushless motor types being preferred for precision underwater applications.

NV Mechanics Design Ltd. offers linear actuators rated to 3,000 msw (meters of sea water) and up to 6,000 meters depth. All units are pressure-compensated with oil to withstand extreme subsea pressures, making them suitable for deep-sea ROVs, offshore oil and gas equipment, and oceanographic research instrumentation.

The actuators are constructed from Stainless Steel 316 (SST 316) or Titanium, both selected for their superior corrosion resistance in harsh marine and saltwater environments. Titanium offers an excellent strength-to-weight ratio for weight-sensitive ROV applications, while SST 316 provides a cost-effective option for general subsea and offshore use.

Two feedback options are available depending on the model. The Trunion 1000N and 60,000 N models feature a rotary resolver mounted on the motor shaft for precise external position feedback. The Self-Compensated model includes an integrated 30-bit absolute encoder on the output shaft that retains position data between power cycles — critical for long-duration subsea deployments.

The Self-Compensated Linear Actuator supports RS422 (RS485 duplex on 4 wires) and RS232 serial communication at 19200 baud. It includes configurable virtual software limit switches and user-adjustable EEPROM parameters. The Trunion 1000N and 60,000 N models use external resolver feedback and require an external driver or control logic system supplied separately.
