A hydraulic rotary actuator converts hydraulic fluid pressure into rotational mechanical motion. Pressurized fluid enters the actuator housing and acts on internal components — such as a vane or piston — causing rotation of the output shaft. The direction and degree of rotation are controlled by regulating fluid flow and pressure, enabling precise positioning in industrial and subsea applications.

The Rotary Actuator – Self Compensated is rated to 3000 msw (meters of sea water), making it suitable for deep-sea ROVs, subsea robotic manipulators, and underwater inspection systems operating in extreme pressure environments. The actuator is pressure compensated with oil to maintain internal equilibrium at depth.

The actuator supports RS422 (RS485 full duplex on 4 wires) and RS232 serial communication protocols, operating at 19200 baud with 8, N, 1 settings. Communication parameters are stored in EEPROM and are user-configurable. A Windows application (DCBL_ABS_Control_Rot_9) is available to simplify command interface and integration into existing control systems.

The actuator achieves a position precision of 0.1 degrees at the output shaft, enabled by a 30-bit absolute encoder combining a 14-bit single-turn encoder with a 16-bit turns counter. Critically, this absolute encoder retains position data across power cycles, eliminating the need for re-homing after power interruptions — a key advantage in subsea deployments.
