Subsea Electric Motors for Deepwater Offshore Applications

Brushless DC (BLDC) motors are the standard choice for submersibles and ROVs due to their high efficiency, low maintenance, and reliability without brush wear. NV Mechanics Design's subsea actuators all use brushless motors paired with absolute encoders and integrated driver electronics, enabling precise position control in demanding deepwater environments without requiring external motor controllers.

Products are available in two depth rating tiers: 3,000 msw (meters of seawater) for the self-compensated linear and rotary actuators, and 6,000 meters for the Trunion 1000N and 60,000 N Force linear actuators. Both tiers use pressure-compensated oil-filled housings to maintain integrity at rated depths.

Linear actuators span a wide force range, from 1,000 N (220 lbs) on the self-compensated model up to 77,500 N (7,000 lbs) on the Trunion series, and up to 50,000 N on the 60,000 N Force model. The rotary actuator delivers up to 27 Nm nominal torque at 30 RPM, suitable for valve actuation and manipulator applications.

The self-compensated linear and rotary actuators support RS422 (RS485 full-duplex on 4 wires) and RS232 serial communication at 19200 baud, 8, N, 1. Parameters and virtual limit switch positions are stored in internal EEPROM. A Windows software utility and integration guides are also provided to simplify commissioning and configuration.

Actuators are manufactured from Stainless Steel 316 (SST 316) or Titanium, both chosen for their excellent resistance to saltwater corrosion in marine and offshore environments. Electrical connectivity is provided through Seacon or Subcon underwater-rated wet-mate connectors, ensuring reliable subsea electrical interfaces throughout the product's service life.

Yes. The self-compensated linear and rotary actuators feature a 30-bit absolute multi-turn encoder mounted on the output shaft. This encoder retains full position information between power cycles without requiring a homing routine on restart, which is critical for subsea ROV and valve actuation systems where re-homing at depth is impractical or unsafe.
