Underwater Rotary Actuators in South Carolina

The actuator supports both RS422 (RS485 full duplex on 4 wires) and RS232 serial communication at 19200 baud, 8, N, 1 configuration. Communication parameters are stored in EEPROM, allowing custom configurations to persist across power cycles. This makes it straightforward to integrate with standard ROV control systems and topside computers.

The actuator uses a 30-bit absolute multi-turn encoder — a 14-bit single-turn encoder (16,383 counts/turn) combined with a 16-bit turns counter. This combination records the exact output shaft position at all times. When power is restored, the controller immediately knows the actuator's position without requiring a homing routine.

The actuator supports two operating modes: continuous spin (jog) mode for free rotation, and precise position control mode with 0.1° resolution at the output shaft. Two software-configurable virtual travel limit switches can also be set to protect mechanical stops and prevent over-travel during operation.

The rotary actuator uses an MCBH8M SubConn underwater connector with 8 pins. SubConn connectors are an industry-standard underwater wet-mateable connector widely used on ROVs and subsea instrumentation, ensuring a reliable, watertight electrical connection rated for deep-sea pressures.

The actuator delivers a nominal continuous torque of 19 ft·lbf (27 Nm) at a maximum output shaft speed of 30 RPM using a 238:1 gear ratio. The maximum continuous current draw is 2.9 A at 24 VDC. This combination makes it well-suited for valve actuation, pan-and-tilt systems, and manipulator joints.
